In this spirited and absorbing narrative, Brett Walker takes a deep look at the scientific, cultural, and environmental dimensions of wolf extinction in Japan and tracks changing attitudes toward nature through Japan's long history.

Grain farmers once worshiped wolves at shrines and left food offerings near their dens, beseeching the elusive canine to protect their crops from the sharp hooves and voracious appetites of wild boars and deer. Talismans and charms adorned with images of wolves protected against fire, disease, and other calamities and brought fertility to agrarian communities and to couples hoping to have children. The Ainu people believed that they were born from the union of a wolflike creature and a goddess.

In the eighteenth century, wolves were seen as rabid man-killers in many parts of Japan. Highly ritualized wolf hunts were instigated to cleanse the landscape of what many considered as demons. By the nineteenth century, however, the destruction of wolves had become decidedly unceremonious, as seen on the island of Hokkaido. Through poisoning, hired hunters, and a bounty system, one of the archipelago's largest carnivores was systematically erased.

The story of wolf extinction exposes the underside of Japan's modernization. Certain wolf scientists still camp out in Japan to listen for any trace of the elusive canines. The quiet they experience reminds us of the profound silence that awaits all humanity when, as the Japanese priest Kenko taught almost seven centuries ago, we "look on fellow sentient creatures without feeling compassion."

Gerald Durrell writes with great wit and brings to life the Durrell family and the people of Corfu. Sometimes the science of the animals that the young Gerald collects and studies becomes a bit much, but I have to remind myself, that this is a naturalist book, not just an amusing memoir. The television version focused on the family and did not have nearly as much of the science, so that colored my attitude. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series.

I had been enjoying the Durrells in Corfu on P B S. The book is equally as good. Loved all the characters that interact with the family. Gerald has a writing style that flows while the language is a bit strange at times. Many words that I had to define stated no meaning. All of the family members are heart warming, with mother winning my heart. What an adventurous women to have up rooted her family to such a exotic place. The adventures of them all had me laughing out loud. I loved learning about the work Mr. DURRELL has done for animal conservation. I look forward to visiting the place that bears this name.

You must read the series. Funny. Vivid imagery. Hilarious situations and characters. Enhances the tv series. I want to be a member of this family. Never a dull moment. Uplifting. Cheery.

I adore this book it is every bit as wonderful as the series based on the books. Reading about Gerry and Roger's adventures and the rest of this awesome family really are a joy. I find the details fascinating and a great escape at the end of my day, I am 80% done reading this book and will miss it when I am done.

As a fan of the Durrell’s of Corfu, I was prepared to like this story, and I did. The story itself was engaging and entertaining, but the writing, particularly when he was describing animals and their habitats, painted a picture that made me feel as if I were in Corfu with the author.

Gerald Durrell is always a delight, the Corfu books in particular . While the eccentricities described might be exaggerated, they are good light comedy. Durrell is skilled at descriptive writing. An added pleasure is reading about the great writer Lawrence Durrell as a callow young man

The book arrived in excellent condition. It is one of the Corfu Trilogy books that I think should be mandatory reading for everyone. They are delightful and I don't know anyone who doesn't love them.

I have been watching the series on PBS and thought the books would be fun to read. For me personally they are very dry. I wish I had just bought the first one to try out and not the whole series.
